In Good Old Neon exhibition, I think about the light that evokes memories of my parents, the journey back home, and the Art I made in 2017 (Time to travel - film screening). This art creating event occurred one year before my father passed away and before my mother fell ill and had to undergo treatment up to the present day. I divided the series into two parts, which are connected through the aforementioned memories. The work consists of a photography exhibition and a video and sculpture showcasing Time to travel (2017) to narrate the remaining traces of those moments and times.
The Time to travel involved creating shared memories of watching films together with people at home and in the community. I transformed a community space into a makeshift cinema with the components from our everyday objects, feeling that after the elders - my grandparents, my father gradually departed from this world, the memories and activities that fostered communal life were fading away with them. The makeshift cinema, which was gradually disappearing, thus became a space to create new experiences from watching films together. Both the older generation familiar with makeshift cinemas and the younger generation who lacks of experience about makeshift cinemas, get to experience this moment together.
I together with my family, utilized used fertilizer bags and bamboo poles to create the makeshift cinema screen. Fertilizer bags are an integral part of rural life and agriculture, unavoidable for farming. The bags after finished their role as fertilizer containers, were simply used for multi-purpose functions. With limited choices and often have to bear the risk or be squeezed by the cost of fertilizer, we still use fertilizer since it is what makes up our dreams and hopes for a living.
While time to travel(2017) recorded shared memories of the area, it also served as a documentation of my father, mother, and me together. During the time I came to study in Bangkok, there were more frequent returns to work at home. I chose a series of photographs that resonated with the event and important moments of my life intertwined with the film screening. The light on the windshield of the Bangkok-Surin tour bus, the brightness from the light bulbs behind the movie screen, were artworks that captured shared memories of watching films together with people at home and in the community. At the same time, it vividly recorded the story of my family, my father, mother, and me together.
